5 Facts About Branding With Truck Wraps

By | Export, Fleet Graphics, Partial Vehicle Wraps, Truck Wraps, Utility Box Wraps, Vehicle Wrap
white and green partial vehicle wrap on black pickup for NEP Construction

There’s a steady flow of trucks past my office window and through our parking lot every day.  They carry lots of hard-working folks – but only a few of the trucks are really working as hard as they could for their owners. . .

Make your truck do more than haul you and your gear.  Get a truck wrap and make it a moving billboard and brand ambassador!  It is proven that wraps drive business which means your vehicles are working as hard as your employees.

Not quite sure about this idea?  Consider these 5 important facts about a truck wrap:

Fact 1:  A wrapped truck is a 24/7 billboard at work for your brand.

Truck wraps are essentially billboards on wheels.  Wherever you go, your truck is advertising your brand and your message.  Literally, thousands of people will see your truck each month.  In fact, the Transportation Advertising Council reports vehicle advertising generates between 30,000 and 70,000 daily impressions!  On average a person drives 300 miles a week which makes outdoor advertising like truck wraps very effective.

Fact 2:  You don’t always have to wrap 100% of your truck to send an effective message.

You see the super cool trucks out there that are completely covered with fantastic graphics.  When the design is right, they create an unforgettable image, but a smart partial wrap design can make good use of the most visible areas of your truck to make a big impact, too.  The partial wrap of a pickup for NEP Construction is a simple design that really pops.  Our gallery gives you more examples.

Fact 3:  Truck graphics are a cost-effective marketing investment.

Let’s just do the math.  Say you pay $2,500 for a truck wrap.  If it lasts for 3 years, and most wrap vinyl is rated for 5+ years (lifetime varies), your investment is $69.44 per month.  Assuming a very conservative 2,000 impressions per business day or 40,000 impressions per month (some companies claim 30 to 7ok impressions per day, but c’mon man, let’s keep it real!) your brand is shown to 1,000 impressions for $1.74 per month.  That works out to less than $0.001 everytime someone looks at your truck.  No other advertising media reaches so many people, makes such an impression and costs so little!   Still not convinced?  According to a study of all drivers by the American Trucking Association called The Visual Impact of Trucks in Traffic, showed:

96%  noticed truck side ads
98% said fleet graphics created a positive image for the company
96% said fleet graphics had more impact than billboards
75% of people developed an impression about a company and its products
29% would base a buying decision on the impression

Fact 4:  Truck wraps can be included in the new purchase or lease financing.

Some lenders will include the cost of your full or partial wrap in your upfront costs so it is just included in your monthly payment.  You’ll need a solid plan in advance to be sure the full cost is accurately estimated for the job, but we’ve worked with both truck owners and banks in the past and would love to do it again!

Fact 5:  You don’t have to give up your truck for days on end for your truck wrap installation.

Some truck owners we talk with are worried they’ll have to leave their truck for several days to have a wrap installed.  Even a full wrap can be usually be completely installed in 1-2 days.  No need to schedule your wrap installation at the expense of your company’s productivity.

Push Thru Sign for Legacy 6

push through acrylic lit sign with brushed aluminum

Push thru signs use a solid piece of acrylic that is routed into letters then inserted into the sign face.  In this case, we used clear acrylic letters with a translucent green vinyl to give the sign the glow.  The number 6 in the logo is clear acrylic with a brushed aluminum laminate face.  This creates a halo-lit effect for just that element.  The sign itself is a lighted cabinet.  The led strip lights inside create a very even light distribution.  The face of the cabinet had the same letters routed out so the acrylic letters can ‘push thru’.

Legacy 6 Construction takes great pride in their logo and lighted push thru signs create a modern look in their office lobby.  The first impression some customers get is your business lobby.  A lighted lobby sign like the one here is unique and eye-catching.

How To Display DOT Numbers On Your Company Vehicles

Do I Need USDOT Numbers On My Commercial Vehicles?

Currently, 37 states require commercial vehicles to display DOT numbers.  For some reason, it is really hard to find out how to properly display them on your truck.  Fortunately, The Mighty Sign Makers have got your (DOT) number.  Here’s the short version:

DOT numbers must be located on the cab door or just to the right of the door when facing the cab.  The number must be on both the driver and passenger sides.  Colors must “contrast sharply” with background colors and be large enough to be seen from a minimum distance of 50 feet during daylight hours when the vehicle is stationary.   – Source Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Administration (FMVSA)

Our letter visibility chart shows that 2 inches, or taller, lettering is visible from 50 feet.

Seems simple enough.  Most companies use block letters but a fancier font can be used as long as the writing is legible.  The vast majority of companies use long-lasting vinyl lettering for vehicle lettering.  The lettering is typically in white or black but it can be any color as long as there is a sharp contrast with the color of the vehicle.  If you run with a lot of chrome, the lettering can be chrome as long as it contrasts.  Since the vehicle is new, newly painted, or new to you, we suggest that you add your company contact information, and logo at the same time.

Information to display?

According to the Motor Carriers Guide to Improve Highway Safety, Vehicle Identification (390.21), every commercial motor vehicle operated by a motor carrier in interstate commerce must be marked, on BOTH sides of the vehicle, with the following:

  • The motor carrier’s name or trade name
  • The motor carrier’s identification number, preceded by “US DOT”
  • The size, shape and color markings must be in letters that contrast sharply in color with the background on which the letters are placed
  • The lettering must be readily legible during daylight hours, from a distance of 50 feet.

What else should you put on the sides of your vehicle?  Your truck is one of the public faces of your company.  Use it to promote your company with logos, taglines, contact information, and phone or website.

What are the USDOT Number requirements?

Now we are getting into regulations which can change so you shouldn’t rely solely on the Mighty Sign Makers’ blog post.  Just about every state has adopted the FMCSA rules which require all interstate carriers and intrastate carriers need to have US DOT numbers.  Both Washington and Oregon follow the FMCSA guidelines.  According to the FMCSA website, you are required to obtain a USDOT number if you have a vehicle that:

  • Is used to transport the types and quantities of hazardous materials requiring a safety permit in intrastate commerce (see 49 CFR 385.403).

  • Has a gross vehicle weight rating or gross combination weight rating, or gross vehicle weight or gross combination weight, of 4,536 kg (10,001 pounds) or more, whichever is greater; or
  • Is designed or used to transport more than 8 passengers (including the driver) for compensation; or
  • Is designed or used to transport more than 15 passengers, including the driver, and is not used to transport passengers for compensation

AND is involved in Interstate Commerce:

Trade, traffic, or transportation in the United States—

  • Between a place in a State and a place outside of such State (including a place outside of the United States);
  • Between two places in a State through another State or a place outside of the United States; or
  • Between two places in a State as part of trade, traffic, or transportation originating or terminating outside the State or the United States.

What about displaying Operating Authority (MC number)?

If you are required to have an MC number then the display requirements are the same as the DOT number.

Where do I go to get high-quality numbers, lettering, and logos?

At Specialty Graphic Solutions we only use the highest quality materials that are designed for long life during outdoor automotive use.  We use 3M, Avery and Oracal vinyl which we feel are the best products on the market.  The Mighty Sign Makers can install the graphics for a professional look.  Why use a company like Specialty Graphic Solutions?  Because we care about our customers and their needs and we do things right the first time.  About 80% of our business is repeat or referral.  We are particularly good at working with fleets of vehicles.

Corporate Values and Company Mission Statements

By | Dimensional Letter Signs, Export, Inside Signs, Interior Signs, Lobby Signs, Uncategorized, Wall Graphics, Wall Murals, Walls Graphics

A corporate values display for a wall showcases what your company believes.  Every company has unique values.  A core values display can take many forms and should be unique to each company. Once your company establishes its mission statement, values or just some words that stand for your company beliefs, the Mighty Sign Makers will display it in all of its glory!

Display your values proudly

A wall display is ideal because it keeps those words front and center.  A core values display doesn’t have to cost a lot of money.  The Mighty Sign Makers have done some really awesome wall graphics using cut vinyl.  One of our most popular projects is the Permafrost Corporate Values display.  We used multiple frosted vinyl panels that float off the wall each with a value done in white lettering.  Bright, brushed aluminum, 3-d lettering really brings the display together nicely.

The Value of Values

When selecting values that represent your organization, it is easy to fall into the standard values trap.  For example, look at these values:  Communication. Respect. Integrity. Excellence.   Pretty good ones, right?  These are from Enron.  Remember them?  It doesn’t do much good to have words like these if they don’t represent the way your company operates.  In their defense, Greed, Lies, and Deceit don’t really look good as a corporate values display in the lobby.  At Specialty Graphic Solutions we take our company values very seriously.  We call it our Manifesto.

Mighty Sign Maker Manifesto

We know these things to be true:
  • Creative Thinking Builds A Better Mouse Trap
    • Step outside the box to open up new possibilities for design,
      materials, processes and problem-solving.
  • Two Heads Are Better Than One
    • Communicate, collaborate and be a great team player with other
employees, customers, suppliers and our community.
  • Little Things Make A Big Difference
    • Sweat all the individual little details that make each project unique
      and successful.
  • Responsibility Is Nothing To Fear
    • Take the reins & make things happen. Own your choices, your
      mistakes, AND your successes!
  • Sustainability Is More Than Just-Recycling
    • Use all our resources wisely – materials, people & time – to create a
healthy future for our company and our community.
  • Great Service Is Personal
    • Know our customers and their individual needs. That’s how we can
focus our efforts to solve THEIR specific problems.

The difference between a company like Enron and Specialty Graphic Solutions, other than the obvious: we are still in business, is really believing in our corporate values.  It is critical that everyone in your company from the senior executives down to the most important people punching the time clock all believe and live those values.  A corporate values display is a great way to show your people and the world what your organization lives and breathes.

At Specialty Graphic Solutions the Mighty Sign Makers we work by our manifesto.  We know that any of our customers can look at those words and know we walk the walk.

Vinyl Wraps for Utility Boxes in Vancouver? You Bet!

By | Electric Box Wraps, Export, Utility Box Wraps | No Comments

Here at Specialty Graphic Solutions, we get a lot of calls from businesses that want signs and graphics that’ll help them stand out. But, did you know there’s a need for graphics that’ll make certain eyesores blend in? It’s true! In cities across North America, local governments are commissioning sign companies and artists to turn utility boxes into works of art. And, the mighty sign makers at SGS are itching to help out with vinyl wraps for utility boxes in Vancouver, WA.

Wraps Help with Graffiti Prevention

Don’t get us wrong: we love graffiti art. We’ve watched Exit through the Gift Shop a number of times and believe there are many talented graffiti artists. Unfortunately, utility boxes tend to attract those whose artistic skills could best be described as a dog peeing everywhere to mark its territory. It’s not attractive. It’s just kind of there and unpleasant. These taggers ruin things for the true artists out there.

Anyway, this blog entry isn’t meant to be an artistic critique of graffiti. Instead, we want to help you reduce your graffiti clean-up duties with vinyl wraps. With vibrant, full-color wraps with rich graphics, taggers will just move along since their tag will be unreadable with such a busy background. Plus, we can add graffiti-resistant finishes that make it easy to remove any tags from particularly persistent persons.

To Blend in or Not

Many municipalities have chosen to wrap their utility boxes to match their surroundings. Others prefer to display art pieces or historical information relevant to the area. It all depends on what you’re hoping to achieve. For utility boxes in out-of-the-way areas that get little foot traffic, we recommend graphics that blend into the surroundings. This includes high-resolution pictures of local foliage. If you’re looking to inspire pride in your community, historical pictures and information in popular neighborhoods is a better idea.

Wraps versus Paint

Some cities like to promote local artists by using their utility boxes to showcase their work. This is an excellent idea when executed correctly. When you choose to paint the utility boxes, you really limit the potential. For example, the paint will likely chip easily in the harsh weather, it’s susceptible to graffiti, and it will cost you more.

With the growing popularity of vinyl wraps, more artists and local governments are choosing to have artwork rendered on vinyl adhesive films, which are then applied to the electrical boxes. This is more affordable, more durable, and we can easily reprint the graphics for you if the wrap needs to be repaired or replaced.

That’s a Wrap

We live and work in a beautiful city, but we think we can help make it even nicer with vinyl wraps for electrical boxes in Vancouver, WA. Our Mighty Sign Makers have experience wrapping just about everything from forklifts to coffee carts, and we’re always up for a good challenge. If you’d like to beautify your town, contact SGS today for a free consultation and quote on utility box wraps.

The Versatility of Post and Panel Signs

By | Export, Post and Panel Signs | No Comments

Is your business hidden from the road by a few large Douglas fir trees? How do people even know what you’re up to? Unless you’re running a top secret spy agency that doesn’t accept visitors, you need a way to let potential customers know where they can find you. If you’re working with a budget and want to present a certain type of image, post and panel signs for Vancouver, WA may be exactly what the doctor (or property manager) ordered.

Post and Panel Signs Are Adaptable

You may assume that post and panel signs only come in one size, that we go to the post and panel factory and pick up the one model they make, then we hope that it’s right for your enterprise. This simply isn’t the case. We know that every business is different, so we have a broad range of options to ensure you get what’s best for your organization.

If you’re located along a street with high speed limits, we know you’ll need a larger sign so motorists can see where you’re located with plenty of time to slow down and turn into your parking lot without having to reenact scenes from The Fast and the Furious movies.

There are double and single post setups. The double post markers provide a somewhat old-fashioned appeal that’s ideal for performing arts centers, family physicians, day care centers, and more. In addition, since they’re easy to update, post and panel markers are perfect for business entrances, directory signs, and multi-tenant buildings. When information changes, we can simply slide one panel out and replace it with another. There are even specialty shapes and post caps for an extra fancy look.

They Won’t Break Your Budget

With the amount of lost business you could suffer from consumers failing to find your storefront, one could argue that you can’t afford NOT to have post and panel signs in Vancouver, WA. However, they’re inexpensive nonetheless. The costs will depend upon what materials you use, what custom features you want, and the size of your sign.

One of the more affordable post and panel materials is aluminum composite. It doesn’t warp, fracture, or rot. It can also withstand pouring rain, direct sunlight, freezing temperatures, blazing heat, and anything else the Pacific Northwest can throw at it. Pests, birds, and bears all leave these signs alone. We also offer PVC, HDU, and wood options.

Put a Light on It

Unlike Elton John, you can let the sun go down on you when you have ground or side lighting to illuminate your post and panel signs at night. This is a must for business that invite clients in after dark, which comes pretty early in the winter months. Our mighty sign makers have the knowhow needed to install LED lighting systems that make your marker easy to see the energy efficient and cost effective way.

Do we have you yearning for more information about the wonders of post and panel signs? If so, please contact our friendly professionals today for a free consultation!

Life-size Cutouts Are Big Part of Legendary Marketing Promotion

By | Export, Inside Signs | No Comments

Do you believe in legends and mythical creatures?  iQ Credit Union believes they can help make a big impression and we do too!  Our challenge: create seven foot tall, life-size cutouts of Sasquatch.  These life-size stand ups are part of iQ’s new legendary loan rates promotion.

Building a custom stand up of mythical proportion is no problem for the mighty sign makers at SGS.  We’ve done our fair share of wrangling the unusual and we love the projects iQ Credit Union brings. This includes sock monkeys, various sea critters and adorable canines!  We specialize in taking our customers’ creative ideas and bringing them to life.

It’s not every day that you get asked to make a seven foot tall Sasquatch.  The conversation went something like this:

“You know those big cardboard standups?”

“Can you make some that are seven feet tall?”

“Of course!”

“Can you make some of them fold up for transport?”

“We’ll find a way!”

“Oh – and at least one has to fit into a tiny Scion iQ Car.”

“We can do it!”

iQ made Sasquatch fashionable with a fanny pack too.  He’s modeling their quarterly promotional giveaway for members who update their email addresses with the credit union.

Naturally, iQ needed some massive Sasquatch footprints for their branches too.  These fun floor graphics are another way for iQ to promote this campaign plus they add an interactive element.  You can see children and adults following each Big Foot through the branches.

The graphics can be applied to any tile or low-pile carpeted surface. When the campaign is over, they simply peel off and leave no trace behind. Just like the Big Guy himself.

Do you have a legendary project?  SGS has you covered from head to foot! Talk to the mighty sign makers by calling (360) 635-5556 or 503-766-3331. 3 Tips For Creating Amazing Lobby Signs for Your Business

By | Export, Interior Signs

The Importance of Interior Signs

Imagine treating yourself to a massage at a new place in town.  You park out front and go in the closest door to the overhead sign.  There’s no sign on the door or inside anywhere.  No one is at the reception desk.  You have to wonder, “Am I in the right place?”  Has this ever happened to you?

Getting new customers is hard work!  So don’t let customers turn around and walk out the door in confusion.  Your outdoor sign helped you get them into your business.  Put up a lobby sign to welcome them once they’re inside.

But not just any lobby sign.  Make that first impression really count with a lobby sign that shares much more than just a “You’re Here” message.

Here are three simple tips you can use to create an amazing lobby sign for your business.

Tip #1: Complement your decor

The best designs for lobby signs follow this simple rule – blend the character of the company and the surroundings.  That’s why it’s important your signs are designed with your decor in mind.  No matter how good a deal you can get on a futuristic, clear acrylic sign with red LED lighting, it won’t really work in an elegant professional waiting area with mahogany paneling.

This reception sign by The Bold Collective brands the space and serves as a great piece of art too. This reception sign by The Bold Collective brands the space and serves as a great piece of art too.

Tip #2: Show your personality

The most amazing lobby signs have some character.  A children’s clothing maker might want to show a bold and playful look with brightly colored dimensional logos that stand off the wall to look a little like they are floating.  But a company that makes sustainable clothing and gear for serious outdoor enthusiasts might choose a lobby sign that uses colors like green and brown and natural materials such as wood and stone to convey its personality.

We found this on Pinterest and loved the mix of reclaimed wood and smooth metal that makes this sign cool. We found this on Pinterest and loved the mix of reclaimed wood and smooth metal that makes this sign cool.

Tip #3: Work with professionals who can bring your lobby sign design to life

The most important tip of all is to work with a team of professionals who know how to bring your design to life. The right sign company will take the time to understand you and your business and ensure all the little details are considered for your lobby sign project.  The right sign company will also have lots of different materials, fabrication methods and mounting options so your logo is displayed in just the right way.

Dragon Boat Wraps

By | Export, Wild Card

Honey, I Wrapped A Dragon Boat – Dragon Boat Wraps

When we say we are open to wrapping just about anything that drives, flies or floats – we mean it! When the Rotary Club of Shreveport bought two new dragon boats for their annual festival, they wanted to use one of the boats to highlight the 100th anniversary of their community service club.  We do dragon boat wraps

The sleek, fast fiberglass boats are the perfect blank canvas for customization. The annual dragon boat races on the Red River are a signature community event and the custom vinyl dragon boat wraps we produced will help enhance the brand of the Rotary Club and promote this annual paddling festival and fund raiser.

We worked with key members of the Shreveport Rotary to tailor their design vision to fit the 41′ long dragon boat.  One side of the boat featured crisp white lettering on a deep blue background to commemorate the Rotary Club of Shreveport’s long-standing involvement in the local community.

The other side was a twist on the traditional dragon scale design featured on most dragon boats.  This special Rotary Club boat included the Rotary International logo embedded within the repeating scale pattern.

Great Looking Dragon Boat Wraps

The graphics were printed on single sheets of premium wrap vinyl and laminated to protect against damage from sun and water. The 3M material we used is flexible and designed to conform to the curves of the boat. And because we were able to print the design in a single panel on each side it also gave the boat wrap a flawless, seam-free finish.

Once we finished production, we rolled up the wrap panels and shipped them off to Shreveport. Dynamite Signs of Bossier City did an outstanding job with the installation of the graphics.  They specialize in boat wraps, but had never wrapped a dragon boat before.  Jason at Dynamite Signs made it look easy to tame this beast!

The boat made its racing debut at this year’s Red River Dragon Boat Festival. This fall marked the 5th annual event that doubles as a fun, team-building competition and raises funds for civic endeavors in the greater Shreveport community.
