Letter Size and Color Are Important When Choosing the Right Signs!

One of the most iconic signs in America is the Hollywood Sign. You can see it from miles around. Wouldn’t it be nice if you could have a sign of that size marketing the location of your enterprise? Well, unless you’re located near the top of Mount Hood (in which case you would have bigger problems), this may not be the best sign for your purposes.

Have you ever actually visited the sign? At 45 feet tall, the letters are nearly impossible to read when you’re right by them. In all likelihood, you want your signs to be legible. Fortunately, the mighty sign makers at Specialty Graphic Solutions are among the best graphic designers for signs in Vancouver, WA. We can provide you with signs featuring the ideal letter sizes and colors to get your message across.

Size Does Matter

Sure, the Hollywood Sign letters may be too big for you, but for the most part, bigger is better in the sign industry. Your first consideration when choosing letter sizes is who you’re hoping will read it. We’re not talking about whether giants or miraculously literate ants will be seeing them. Instead, where will the reader be located?

If your organization is along a freeway, many of the people who will see your signs won’t have long to focus on it. On the other hand, foot traffic has longer to home in. Take a look at our Letter Visibility Chart for a better idea of what we’re talking about. Your 5-foot-tall (or 60-inch) letter will have its best impact within 600 feet. This will be readable for people flying by at 60 MPH. Yet, people on feet will also be able to see these letters clear at nearly half-a-mile (2500 feet) away.

But Size Isn’t Everything

Let’s get back to the Hollywood sign again, and not just because the weather is warmer there right now. Imagine if it’s incredibly cold in Hollywood. Imagine it actually snows, and the snow sticks. How legible would the white letters of the sign be then? The tourists would probably be pretty disappointed.

This is because no matter how big your letters are, they also need to contrast well with their background. We go into more detail on this with our Increasing Readability chart. Essentially, our graphic designers start with your branding. Most of the time, you have chosen colors that contrast well. Otherwise, you wouldn’t have chosen them in the first place. Yet, if you’re trying to install dimensional letters or graphics on a background that doesn’t contrast well, we can use our contrast skills to make sure your sign is still visible.

For instance, if the main color element in your branding is red, but the focal wall where you want your dimensional letters is already red. Then, red letters obviously won’t work. We’ll recommend using your secondary colors or neutral colors, like black or white.
