5 Facts About Branding With Truck Wraps

By | Export, Fleet Graphics, Partial Vehicle Wraps, Truck Wraps, Utility Box Wraps, Vehicle Wrap
white and green partial vehicle wrap on black pickup for NEP Construction

There’s a steady flow of trucks past my office window and through our parking lot every day.  They carry lots of hard-working folks – but only a few of the trucks are really working as hard as they could for their owners. . .

Make your truck do more than haul you and your gear.  Get a truck wrap and make it a moving billboard and brand ambassador!  It is proven that wraps drive business which means your vehicles are working as hard as your employees.

Not quite sure about this idea?  Consider these 5 important facts about a truck wrap:

Fact 1:  A wrapped truck is a 24/7 billboard at work for your brand.

Truck wraps are essentially billboards on wheels.  Wherever you go, your truck is advertising your brand and your message.  Literally, thousands of people will see your truck each month.  In fact, the Transportation Advertising Council reports vehicle advertising generates between 30,000 and 70,000 daily impressions!  On average a person drives 300 miles a week which makes outdoor advertising like truck wraps very effective.

Fact 2:  You don’t always have to wrap 100% of your truck to send an effective message.

You see the super cool trucks out there that are completely covered with fantastic graphics.  When the design is right, they create an unforgettable image, but a smart partial wrap design can make good use of the most visible areas of your truck to make a big impact, too.  The partial wrap of a pickup for NEP Construction is a simple design that really pops.  Our gallery gives you more examples.

Fact 3:  Truck graphics are a cost-effective marketing investment.

Let’s just do the math.  Say you pay $2,500 for a truck wrap.  If it lasts for 3 years, and most wrap vinyl is rated for 5+ years (lifetime varies), your investment is $69.44 per month.  Assuming a very conservative 2,000 impressions per business day or 40,000 impressions per month (some companies claim 30 to 7ok impressions per day, but c’mon man, let’s keep it real!) your brand is shown to 1,000 impressions for $1.74 per month.  That works out to less than $0.001 everytime someone looks at your truck.  No other advertising media reaches so many people, makes such an impression and costs so little!   Still not convinced?  According to a study of all drivers by the American Trucking Association called The Visual Impact of Trucks in Traffic, showed:

96%  noticed truck side ads
98% said fleet graphics created a positive image for the company
96% said fleet graphics had more impact than billboards
75% of people developed an impression about a company and its products
29% would base a buying decision on the impression

Fact 4:  Truck wraps can be included in the new purchase or lease financing.

Some lenders will include the cost of your full or partial wrap in your upfront costs so it is just included in your monthly payment.  You’ll need a solid plan in advance to be sure the full cost is accurately estimated for the job, but we’ve worked with both truck owners and banks in the past and would love to do it again!

Fact 5:  You don’t have to give up your truck for days on end for your truck wrap installation.

Some truck owners we talk with are worried they’ll have to leave their truck for several days to have a wrap installed.  Even a full wrap can be usually be completely installed in 1-2 days.  No need to schedule your wrap installation at the expense of your company’s productivity.

How To Display DOT Numbers On Your Company Vehicles

Do I Need USDOT Numbers On My Commercial Vehicles?

Currently, 37 states require commercial vehicles to display DOT numbers.  For some reason, it is really hard to find out how to properly display them on your truck.  Fortunately, The Mighty Sign Makers have got your (DOT) number.  Here’s the short version:

DOT numbers must be located on the cab door or just to the right of the door when facing the cab.  The number must be on both the driver and passenger sides.  Colors must “contrast sharply” with background colors and be large enough to be seen from a minimum distance of 50 feet during daylight hours when the vehicle is stationary.   – Source Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Administration (FMVSA)

Our letter visibility chart shows that 2 inches, or taller, lettering is visible from 50 feet.

Seems simple enough.  Most companies use block letters but a fancier font can be used as long as the writing is legible.  The vast majority of companies use long-lasting vinyl lettering for vehicle lettering.  The lettering is typically in white or black but it can be any color as long as there is a sharp contrast with the color of the vehicle.  If you run with a lot of chrome, the lettering can be chrome as long as it contrasts.  Since the vehicle is new, newly painted, or new to you, we suggest that you add your company contact information, and logo at the same time.

Information to display?

According to the Motor Carriers Guide to Improve Highway Safety, Vehicle Identification (390.21), every commercial motor vehicle operated by a motor carrier in interstate commerce must be marked, on BOTH sides of the vehicle, with the following:

  • The motor carrier’s name or trade name
  • The motor carrier’s identification number, preceded by “US DOT”
  • The size, shape and color markings must be in letters that contrast sharply in color with the background on which the letters are placed
  • The lettering must be readily legible during daylight hours, from a distance of 50 feet.

What else should you put on the sides of your vehicle?  Your truck is one of the public faces of your company.  Use it to promote your company with logos, taglines, contact information, and phone or website.

What are the USDOT Number requirements?

Now we are getting into regulations which can change so you shouldn’t rely solely on the Mighty Sign Makers’ blog post.  Just about every state has adopted the FMCSA rules which require all interstate carriers and intrastate carriers need to have US DOT numbers.  Both Washington and Oregon follow the FMCSA guidelines.  According to the FMCSA website, you are required to obtain a USDOT number if you have a vehicle that:

  • Is used to transport the types and quantities of hazardous materials requiring a safety permit in intrastate commerce (see 49 CFR 385.403).

  • Has a gross vehicle weight rating or gross combination weight rating, or gross vehicle weight or gross combination weight, of 4,536 kg (10,001 pounds) or more, whichever is greater; or
  • Is designed or used to transport more than 8 passengers (including the driver) for compensation; or
  • Is designed or used to transport more than 15 passengers, including the driver, and is not used to transport passengers for compensation

AND is involved in Interstate Commerce:

Trade, traffic, or transportation in the United States—

  • Between a place in a State and a place outside of such State (including a place outside of the United States);
  • Between two places in a State through another State or a place outside of the United States; or
  • Between two places in a State as part of trade, traffic, or transportation originating or terminating outside the State or the United States.

What about displaying Operating Authority (MC number)?

If you are required to have an MC number then the display requirements are the same as the DOT number.

Where do I go to get high-quality numbers, lettering, and logos?

At Specialty Graphic Solutions we only use the highest quality materials that are designed for long life during outdoor automotive use.  We use 3M, Avery and Oracal vinyl which we feel are the best products on the market.  The Mighty Sign Makers can install the graphics for a professional look.  Why use a company like Specialty Graphic Solutions?  Because we care about our customers and their needs and we do things right the first time.  About 80% of our business is repeat or referral.  We are particularly good at working with fleets of vehicles.

Above & Beyond Hydroseed Shines with Fleet Vehicle Graphics!

By | Fleet Graphics, Vehicle Graphics, Vehicle Vinyl Lettering | No Comments

Did you know that using black electrical tape to spell out your business’s name on your work trucks may not be the brand-building tool you thought it would be? It’s true. At best, you can hope that people just won’t see your bootleg vehicle graphics. At worst, it’ll hurt your business.

Sure, you may not go to this extreme of cheapness, but even using standard vehicle lettering isn’t enough to get your name out there these days. You need something more attention-grabbing. That’s exactly what Above & Beyond Hydroseed was looking for when they contacted Specialty Graphic Solutions for equipment graphics in Ridgefield, WA.

The 4-1-1 on Above & Beyond Hydroseed

Headquartered on Northeast 175th Street in Ridgefield, Above & Beyond Hydroseed is a far-out business that delivers personalized customer care and exceptional results (just like SGS!), whether they’re working on improvements to a homeowner’s front yard or providing landscaping for a 400-unit housing development. Founded fifteen years ago by Valerie and John Dewezt, they’re the hydroseed, erosion, and drainage experts.

When an organization that does so much to keep local homes and businesses looking their best came to us for fleet vehicle graphics in Ridgefield, WA, we hit the ground running. Above & Beyond had a couple of new vehicles they’d recently added to their fleet: a Ford F350 Quad Chassis Cab and the Finn hydroseeder trailer. If you guessed it was the T75 model, you’d be correct. They wanted to outfit both of their rigs with their branding and contact info. Fortunately, they contacted the right pros for the job.

We Went the Extra Mile for Above & Beyond

As we start every project, we met with Above & Beyond to chat with them about what they had in mind for their graphics. At this time, we also checked out their vehicles. The Ford F350 was easier because we had templates for it. The hydroseed trailer was a different story. Our mighty sign makers noted the contours of the trailer and mapped out its measurements. Based on the vehicles and the client’s vision, we created a number of art proofs for Above & Beyond. Once they approved of the vehicle graphic designs, we got down to work.

We digitally printed the vehicle graphics in full color using our state of the art large format printer. If you look closely, you can clearly see that we used Oracal 3165 RA gloss vinyl with the Oracal 310 gloss protective laminate to ensure the graphics would look their best far into the future (or about five years). Once the graphics were ready, we scheduled a time to install them when Above & Beyond could be without their truck and trailer for a little while. We’ve tried installing graphics while vehicles are on the move, and it just ends up being messy.

In the end, Above & Beyond was completely thrilled with the job we did. Now, as they make their way from one jobsite to the next, they’re exposing their branding to every Tom, Dick, and Harry they pass by.

Whether you’re out on the town or just keeping it parked at home, vinyl is the way to go.

Wait! What are you doing? Don’t head to the closest mall to buy up the latest vinyl clothing, unless that’s your thing. We don’t judge. We’re talking about making your fleet on fleek with vinyl graphics. Today, we’ll look at some of the ways you can boost your name recognition with fleet graphics in Vancouver, WA.

What Options Are Available?

Much like there are different styles of clothes, there are various types of vehicle graphics you can pick from for your fleet. But, unlike the fashion industry, the amount of material used is usually a good indicator of price. Here’s what’s currently en vogue:

Full and Partial Vehicle Wraps – Full wraps are either the Chanel or muumuu of vehicle graphics: they’re your most expensive option, and they cover everything. No other graphics grab as much attention as full wraps. If full wraps are out of your price range, you might consider partial wraps, which cover anywhere from 25% to 75% of your vehicle.

Perforated Window Vinyl – Vinyl window perf is like a mask for your car. It covers your windows. Before you grow concerned about your drivers getting in accidents because they can’t see anything, you should know that we only install window perf on rear windows, and the vinyl film has thousands of tiny holes that allow you to see out of your vehicle.

Spot Graphics – Your work van will look great in this season’s latest vinyl decals. Boost your brand recognition with decals showcasing your logo. Or, use spot graphics featuring enlarged photographs of your handiwork or top-selling items to really make a splash.

Truck Lettering – We all know someone who’s able to pull off great looks without breaking the bank. In the world of vehicle graphics, that someone would be truck lettering. This is the most affordable way for you to put your company name, contact information, and a list of products and services on your fleet. You can pick from whatever colors you want as well as matte, metallic, reflective, and neon vinyl styles.

Let Us Give You a Makeover

Without looking down our nose at you like some snooty Neiman Marcus employee, we’ll find the right graphics for your budget whether you have a fleet of two trucks or dozens of vehicles of all types. We’ll hook you up with professionally designed, fabricated, and installed graphics and lettering.

If you manage a fleet, the chances are you’re quite busy. So, let our mighty sign makers take care of every step of the process. We can evaluate your cars, vans, trucks, and boats and make recommendations that will fit your goals. The Amazing Power of Fleet Graphics in Portland Oregon

By | Fleet Graphics, Truck Lettering, Vehicle Vinyl Lettering | No Comments

With all of the money you spend on buying, insuring, and maintaining your fleet vehicles, it may be hard for you to loosen your purse strings for yet another expense. However, if you want to be sure that you have any money in your purse (or wallet or bank account) in the future, it’s imperative that you make the minor investment in fleet graphics in Portland, Oregon.

Let’s look at a fictitious example…

Business A performs incredible work. Their competitor, Business B, performs okay work. They get the job done, but it’s nothing to write home about. Business A uses plain work vehicles with no identifying markings. When they’re on the job site, no one can tell who’s performing the excellent work. Business B has fleet graphics. You can easily tell who’s on the job wherever they may roam.

Now, let’s fast forward to a few months later, and you’re in need of the services that both Businesses A and B provide. Who’re you going to call? It’s unlikely you’ll call Business A – even though they do superior work – because you don’t even know their name. On the other hand, Business B does a passable job, and you’re familiar with their brand. Even if you did know Business A’s name, you’re likely to forget it by the time you need their services. But, if they had vehicle graphics, you’d be reminded as you saw their trucks on the road.

Don’t Be Business A

Is your organization the Clyde Drexler of its industry, but you can’t seem to find enough work? Maybe it’s time for a little investment in vehicle graphics to really boost your name recognition. Here are our slam dunk recommendations:

Truck Lettering – We recommend vinyl lettering to enterprises that want to put their name on their entire fleet without breaking the bank. There are dozens of standard colors and fonts to pick from. Or, we can custom print your letters to match your other marketing materials. If you really want to turn heads, consider metallic, neon, matte, carbon fiber, or reflective vinyl styles.

Spot Graphics – Also referred to as vinyl decals, spot graphics are the most affordable way to put your logo on your fleet. They can also be used to highlight pictures of your handiwork and best-selling products. Spot graphics work perfectly in conjunction with vehicle lettering.

Perforated Window Vinyl – What kind of irresponsible moron covers up their windows with graphics? Woah, hey, let’s not judge just yet! With perforated window vinyl, you can cover any of your rear windows with your marketing message while still allowing the driver to see out. The secret is tiny holes. We only provide this for rear windows, though. We’re not irresponsible morons!

We’ve discussed a lot of budget friendly options above, but if you really want to get the attention of absolutely everyone, we recommend full vehicle wraps. These are a little bit pricey, but they make a big splash.

If you’re tired of losing work to businesses that simply aren’t as good as your enterprise, contact the mighty sign makers at Specialty Graphic Solutions today for a free consultation on fleet graphics in Portland, Oregon. We’ll help you out.

Why Invest in Fleet Graphics in Vancouver?

By | Fleet Graphics, Truck Lettering, Vehicle Vinyl Lettering | No Comments

There’s nothing more frustrating than spending thousands of dollars on an ad campaign and experiencing no increase in sales. This leaves a sinking feeling in the stomachs of business owners and fleet managers. Fortunately, Specialty Graphic Solutions has a sure-fire way to keep your stomach feeling great! No, we’re not talking about Pepto-Bismol. We’re talking about always-effective fleet graphics in Vancouver. Why should you invest in vehicle graphics? Check out these reasons:

You’ll Protect Your Vehicles

For the most part, the roads of the Pacific Northwest are pretty gentle on paint jobs. However, we still get our fair share of light scratches, UV rays, and stone chips. All of these can be protected against with a vehicle wrap. In fact, vinyl wraps can even minimize paintwork damage caused by serious accidents.

By keeping your factory paint in good shape, you’ll protect the resale value of your trucks. Also, with vehicle wraps, you can outfit your vehicles with your gouge-your-eyes-out lime green corporate colors and still be able to sell your vehicles later on. We simply remove your wrap. When you choose to paint your vehicles, it’s much more expensive to get your car back to its original color.

You’ll Advertise Your Company the Cost-Effective Way

Since they’re constantly on the road, fleet vehicles are naturally seen by millions of motorists and pedestrians throughout the year. And, provided you don’t get in an accident, there are no long-term costs for this marketing option.

As a matter of fact, it’ll only cost you an average of a couple bucks a day even when you choose one of the more expensive full vehicle wraps. Also, consumers remember seeing these graphics. 97 percent of respondents to a survey conducted by 3M recalled seeing advertisements on trucks.

You’ll Reach Everybody

Okay. So maybe that’s an exaggeration but not by much. There may be some hermits out there who haven’t left their home since the Carter administration and thus won’t see your wraps, but they weren’t going to be good customers for your enterprise anyway.

On the other hand, you can expect to reach up to 3,000 people per hour in busy places in Vancouver and Portland. You’ll have the opportunity to show off your brand’s personality and connect with potential customers wherever you drive.

You’ll Market 24/7

And, if, in the coming years, Congress introduces more hours to the day, you’ll be able to market your business during those hours as well. Your fleet will get your information in front of plenty of eyes every day as you’re parked along busy roadways or as you run errands, make deliveries, or travel to job sites.

According to a recent survey, consumers has favorable impressions of 75 percent of businesses that use mobile advertising. Also, most people get the feeling that companies that use vehicle graphics are more established and successful. This makes vinyl decals an excellent solution for startups.

This is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to ways investing in fleet graphics in Vancouver can help your enterprise. Contact the mighty sign makers at SGS today if you’re interested in learning about specific ways we can assist your business.

HVAC Contractor Adds RAM ProMaster Fleet Van Wraps in Portland!

Fleep Van Wraps

With everyone carrying around cameras, privacy seems to be a thing of the past. Nowadays, you can’t even go to your local hardware store without paparazzi taking pictures of your van. Luckily, this is the precise problem Comfort Heating & Cooling wanted to have, so they contacted SGS for RAM ProMaster van wraps in Portland, OR.

What’s Comfort Heating & Cooling?

Located in Portland, Comfort Heating & Cooling is dedicated to supplying the best indoor comfort options for businesses and families. Their motto is “Doing the job right the first time.” Their services include residential and commercial ductless mini splits, tankless water heaters, duct cleaning, indoor air quality, and more. Plus, they have a team of professional service technicians who are NATE Certified. NATE isn’t just some dude. It’s the North American Technician Excellence organization, and being certified by them is a big deal.

When a business that has been keeping locals comfy for many years came to us for contractor van wraps in Portland, OR, we played it cool and said we’d love to help. Charlie Wallen, the owner of Comfort Heating & Cooling, came to SGS to wrap two brand new 2015 RAM ProMaster high roof vans he’d just purchased. Fortunately, we knew just how to make them look their best.

We Left Comfort Heating & Cooling Looking Hot

During an initial consultation, we listened closely to what Charlie had in mind for the project. He already had an older box truck with graphics on it. He wanted the two new vans to match the box truck. Our mighty sign maker Jason took a good look at a photo of the box truck and went to work designing graphics for the vans. Charlie loved the mock-ups we provided him with, which featured a blue sky background and the company’s information, so we got to work fabricating the wrap.

For those of you keeping score at home, the graphics were printed on 3M iJ180cV3-10 print vinyl with 3M 8519 luster laminate. Basically, you just need to know that this is premium cast vinyl that’s specifically designed to keep wraps like this looking their best far into the future.

Once the wrap was ready, it was time for installation. Charlie brought in one van at a time for us to wrap in our garage. Our fantastic installers turned the vans from white to WOW at a rate of about seven hours per van.

The Verdict

A week after the vans were finished, Charlie stopped in at the SGS shop. He was ECSTATIC about the wraps. Here’s the evidence:

  • There were four sightings of the new vans shared on the company’s Facebook page within two days of the vans hitting the road.
  • Charlie came out of a hardware store to find someone taking photos of his van.
  • Charlie says, “Everyone’s playing ‘I Spy Comfort Heating & Cooling!’”
  • He’s just really pleased with how they look and how much attention they’re getting!

Does this sound like the kind of impact you would like your company vehicles to have? If so, contact SGS today for a free quote on vehicle wraps!

Legacy 6, Inc. Adds Fleet Graphics to Vehicles and Equipment in Vancouver!

By | Fleet Graphics, Vehicle Wrap | No Comments

When you’re first getting your contractor business off the ground, you don’t tend to have a lot of extra cash to throw around. You’re lucky to have enough money to buy the equipment you absolutely need. So, how can you get your name out there? The smart guys at Legacy 6, Inc. knew the answer to this and contacted Specialty Graphic Solutions for contractor vehicle and equipment vinyl graphics for Vancouver, WA.

Legacy 6, Inc.? Never Heard of’em

In all likelihood, you’ve never heard of Legacy 6, Inc. That’s because they’re a very new construction contractor. In fact, they’re so new, they don’t have a website yet. They’re too busy making a name for themselves through their work. These hard workers are headquartered on Northeast Highway 99 in Vancouver, and they’re already members of the Southwest Washington Contractors Association.

What do these young construction company owners do to grow their brand while they’re out doing the work of excavating and prepping sites for new building projects? Why, they use their vehicles and equipment to showcase their Legacy 6 brand while they drive to job sites and are busy at work. Fortunately, they contacted the mighty sign makers at SGS for fleet graphics for Vancouver, WA.

These L6 Graphics Are Anything but Square

Legacy 6 came to us with existing branding. Their L6 logo was reminiscent of the L7 “square” teens of yesteryear used to create with their thumbs and index fingers. In this context, it created the perfect branding for this upstart. They had a color version and grayscale version of the logo. Since we were working with an excavator and various trucks of different colors, we used the logo version that best complemented the vehicle we were working with. For instance, you can see on the bright orange truck that the green clearly would have clashed.

We created laminated prints of the spot graphics using Oracal 3165RA with air release technology and an Oracal 210 luster laminate to make sure the decals would last for many years to come in the tough conditions they would be exposed to. For the vehicle and DOT numbers, we used Avery 700 high-performance cut vinyl, an affordable and durable solution.

For just a couple hundred dollars, Legacy 6 is now advertising 24-7 on their fleet of vehicles and excavators. And, since these graphics aren’t going to go away in a couple of months, they’ll continue to pay dividends for years to come. Judging by how they think, we’re certain Legacy 6 will be around far down the road. They’re already numbering their fleet!

What kind of legacy are you leaving around town with your plain white (or green, orange, black, red, etc.) fleet vehicles? Without any identifying graphics on your work trucks, consumers have no idea who is performing the excellent construction job on the corner, and they won’t be exposed to your brand against their will while stuck in traffic. Why not take advantage of these excellent marketing opportunities by contacting SGS today for a free consultation on fleet graphics for contractors?

Contractor in Portland? Vehicle Graphics Market 24/7!

By | Fleet Graphics, Vehicle Wrap | No Comments

The great thing about being a contractor is that you have tens of thousands of dollars to toss around to market your company. This is why when you watch primetime television, all you see are over-produced ads for contractors featuring sports superstars and models.

Yeah. This doesn’t sound realistic to us either.

The fact of the matter is that contractors typically have a shoestring marketing budget. You need to be certain that your advertising dollars are going to have a high ROI. Lately, traditional media has dropped the ball in this department. Thankfully, small business owners are learning that vehicle graphics for Portland, OR contractors get the job done.

Your Plain White Van Is Doing You No Favors

You may be thinking, “Hey SGS, don’t vehicle graphics cost tens of thousands of dollars? You just said it was unrealistic to expect contractors to have that sort of advertising budget! What gives?” This is a common misconception. Vehicle graphics are actually more affordable than you might think.

Many entrepreneurs are surprised to find out what they can do with just a modest investment. In fact, research from the world-famous everything manufacturer 3M found that you can get the same level of exposure with a $3,500 vehicle wrap as you could expect from spending $130K on TV or radio ads.

Types of Contractor Vehicle Graphics

Based on your organization’s needs and your budget, you can pick from numerous different vinyl graphics:

  • Vehicle Lettering – Sure, we can put plain black letters on your plain white van, and sure, consumers would know who you are, but we also offer so much more. We can precisely match the colors and fonts found on your other marketing materials. And, you can really catch eyes with metallic, matte, reflective, and neon letters.
  • Wraps – No, we’re not talking about what the group NWA does. These are vehicle wraps, and they’re the most effective vinyl graphics. If you have a little extra money to spend, you can either completely or partially cover your vehicle with graphics that’ll cause heads to turn.
  • Vinyl Decals and Spot Graphics – If you want to display your logo or show off your bestselling products or some of your handiwork, vinyl decals are the ideal type of contractor vehicle graphics for Portland, OR. They work well with vehicle lettering displaying your name and contact information. Very often, these are referred to as partial wraps.
  • Window Perf – It used to be that if you wanted to continue your marketing message on your windows, you had to risk getting in wrecks. That’s no longer the case! With vinyl window perf, you can still see where you’re driving, and passersby can marvel at your graphics.

Using vehicle graphics with vibrant imagery and designs, you advertise your contracting business at all hours of the day and night. Your work trucks are the first impression you make on prospective customers. You don’t inspire trust when you show up to the jobsite with a dingy vehicle lacking your company name or other information. We’ll change that with vehicle graphics.

If you’re ready to have a record year, contact the mighty sign makers at SGS today for a free quote and consultation on vinyl graphics.
